The Mommy Check List: Parenting While Keeping Your Sanity!

Happy belated Mother’s Day to all the mommies out there! In the spirit of the past weekend I wanted to do a special post dedicated to every mother who know all too well the world’s hardest and most rewarding job—MOTHERHOOD! Here’s a fun fact: if moms were given a paycheck for all their work, it would be a six figure salary! (I know many of you are wondering “Where’s my check?!”) šŸ˜‰

Mothers are nurturers and life givers. Other synonyms for the word mother that come to mind are nurse, therapist, referee, teacher, short-order cook, maid, chauffeur, and the list goes on and on. Being a mom is like being a super hero because of the amazing responsibilities we’re capable of doing. Mothers can make houses into homes, make boo-boos better and be there when no one else will be. Most importantly, great mothers love with a love that goes beyond the barriers of time and space, loving what others deem unlovable with hearts stronger than diamonds, but softer than silk.

Ironically, something so beautiful and profoundĀ  as raising little people into functioning adults can put quite the beating on a mother if she’s not careful. Fulfilling the duties of a mother have the potential to make a hottie into a hot-mess and convert an easy-going person into a half-crazy piece of work! Sometimes, mommyhood can be war!!!Ā Before I became a mother, I heard the stories of the many victories and fails of parenthood, but it still didn’t fully prepare me to actually living it. Being a mom is a really big deal and takes a lot of hard work! Like my best friend often says, “Children do not come with an instruction book!” and she’s absolutely right! In the first few years, it was a rollercoaster of highs and lows. There was much joy, laughter, frustrations and tears (from me and the kids)! Sometimes I didn’t know whether I was coming or going. Thankfully I had a team of veterans that were in my life to groom me into the best mommy I could be through it all.

Since we mothers are the backbones of our families, it’s best to avoid becoming unglued and remain healthy in every facet of our lives so our homes will remain healthy and thrive. So for the sake of the many mommies who fight daily to keep soldering on in the name of great parenting (without running away to join the circus), this mommy check list is for you!

    1. Time manage. Organization and consistency can go a long way in keeping even the busiest of moms productive and free from stressing out. Take time to map out a reasonable schedule that works for you and your family to stay on top of the game.
    2. Ink in some “you” time. Give yourself moments during the day to “smell the roses” to relieve or avoid stress. (It’s okay, life still will be waiting for you when you get back to it.)
    3. Make date night a priority. Take time to stay connected to the mister to keep the relationship solid. Make sure to get a sitter you can trust and go paint the town red.
    4. Eat healthy and exercise. A healthy diet and regular exercise can bring a boost to your productivity and aid in lowering stress, getting more energy and a better attitude.
    5. Fulfill your passions. Don’t ignore what God-given passions lie within you or else you run the risk of beingĀ discontent. Seek His direction and He’ll give you the wisdom to fulfill it.
    6. Get proper rest. Your body is not built on batteries, so make time for proper sleep and rest to recharge so you can be equipped to keep pressing on. (see my post ‘Rest: It’s not a dirty word’)
    7. Keep a support system. Iron sharpens iron, so it helps all the more to have great people to lean on and also be there to reciprocate the love.
    8. Say NO! It’s impossible for you to do it all. Learn your limits and set proper boundaries to avoid over extending yourself. Remember, to avoid burn-out, ‘yes’ is not always best.

    This was a great post, I agree with everything you said. I have something to add, it is laughter. Sometimes after a stressful day, I love to sit down and watch something funny on tv or get a funny video. I’m rejuvenated after relaxing and watching the funnies:)
